Below is a list of System Changes from the Persona 4: Arena to Persona 4: Arena Ultimax
- Enhanced Super attacks that cost 75 SP called SB SP Skill Attacks
- Done by using two buttons at the same time instead of one. Similar to Skill Boost Attacks (aka: EX Attacks)
- Short Hop can be cancelled into and has less startup but...
- ... any attack performed from a short hop cancel can be blocked both high or low.
- Characters have different numbers of Persona Cards
- For example, Akihiko has 2, while Elizabeth has 6!
- This is a double edged sword. It's harder to enter Persona Break with more cards, but Persona Break state lasts longer the more cards you have!
- Guard Cancel Roll added
- Similar to Guard Cancel Attack, this is is canceling a guard into a roll for 50 SP.
- S Hold System Added
- Hold the A button to charge a meter that appears on screen.
- Depending on how long the button is held, you will get a Special move with different properties, Super, Awakening super, or Instant Kill on release
- Supers still cost SP, Instant Kills are only available when portrait is flashing.
- Fatal Recovery State added
- All characters now have certain attacks (e.g. Yu's 214D) for which getting hit by any attack during the Counterhit state of the move will force a Fatal Counter.
- Auto Combos for all characters changed
- All characters have new auto combos, however Shadow Mode characters have the old auto combos from P4Arena.
- All characters rebalanced and given new attacks
- As always, characters have been tweaked for balance reasons.
- Average combo damage has been reported to be lower than the previous game.
- All Out Attack
- C follow up will Fatal even if the player fails to mash all the hits.
- D follow up needs 18 hits to Fatal.
- First attack landed in a round gives a 10 SP bonus.
- Almost every character in the game has a Shadow Type
- Selectable at the character select screen, can not change between rounds.
- Elizabeth, both versions of Sho, Shadow Labrys, Margaret, and Adachi do not have Shadow Types.
- Normal Labrys DOES have a Shadow Type, so there is Normal Labrys in Shadow Mode (Ariadne) as well as Shadow Labrys (Asterius).
- Awakening and Burst replaced with Shadow Frenzy. Press A+C+D with 100 SP to activate. Can be canceled into anytime a normal character would be able to One More Burst.
- While in Shadow Frenzy, Shadow characters can cancel special attacks into special attacks for free and have unlimited SP for a limited time
- Performing attacks that cost SP will reduce the amount of time Shadow Frenzy is active.
- Shadow Mode characters have 2000 extra HP when compared to their normal counterparts; Normal Yosuke has 8500 HP while Shadow Yosuke has 10500 HP for example.
- SP Meter carries over between rounds for Shadow Mode characters
- If a round ends while a Shadow Character is in Shadow Frenzy, they will start the next round with half the SP (rounded down) they had during Shadow Frenzy in the previous round.
- While Shadow Mode characters can not go into Awakening, they can perform Awakening Supers anytime.
- Shadow Mode character's attacks do 20% less damage than their normal counterparts.
- Shadow Mode characters are stated to gain SP faster than their normal counterparts.
- Shadow Mode characters have the old auto-combos from the first game.
