Persona 4: Arena Ultimax

Persona 4: Arena Ultimax is the sequel to Persona 4: Arena and takes place a few days after the events of the first game. A red fog appears in town and a new tournament appears on the Midnight Channel called the P1-Climax that shows Mitsuru, Aigis, and Akihiko getting crucified...

New Characters

In addition to all the playable characters from Persona 4: Arena, four new characters have been announced:

  • Yukari Takeba is a zoning character that uses wind magic and arrows to quickly move around and fill the screen with arrows and wind.
  • Junpei Iori uses his baseball bat to attack the opponent and level himself up by hitting the opponent with his bat and scoring 'points' in his baseball meter.
  • Sho Minazuki fights with dual swords and without a persona. This version of Sho has 3 buttons for normal attacks and a dodge button.
  • Sho Minazuki (Tsukiyomi). This version of Sho fights with a persona named Tsukiyomi, can quickly teleport behind the opponent, and has attacks that drain the opponent's health and SP.

Yukari and Junpei are originally from Persona 3, while Sho is a new character to the series.

Shadow Mode

Similar to the Slash/Bust styles of characters found the Samurai Showdown series, almost every character in the game has a Shadow Mode that plays slightly differently from their normal versions.

  • Selectable at the character select screen, can not change between rounds.
    • Elizabeth, both versions of Sho, and Shadow Labrys do not have Shadow Modes.
    • Normal Labrys DOES have a Shadow Mode, so there is Normal Labrys in Shadow Mode as well as Shadow Labrys.
  • Awakening and Burst replaced with Shadow Berserk Mode. Press A+C+D with 100 SP to activate. Can be canceled into anytime a normal character would be able to One More Burst.
    • While in Shadow Berserk Mode, Shadow characters can cancel special attacks into special attacks for free and have unlimited SP for a limited time.
    • Performing attacks that cost SP will reduce the amount of time Shadow Berserk is active.
  • SP Meter carries over between rounds for Shadow Mode characters
  • While Shadow Mode characters can not go into Awakening, they can perform Awakening Supers anytime for 100 SP
  • Shadow Mode character's attacks do 20% less damage than their normal counterparts
  • Shadow Mode characters are stated to gain SP faster than their normal counterparts.

System Changes

Enhanced Super attacks that cost 75 SP called SB Skill Attacks
  • Done by using two buttons at the same time instead of one. Similar to Skill Boost Attacks (aka: EX Attacks)
Short Hop can be cancelled into and has less startup but...
  • ... any attack performed from a short hop can be blocked both high or low.
Characters have different numbers of Persona Cards
  • For example, Akihiko has 2, while Elizabeth has 6!
  • This is a double edged sword. It's harder to enter Persona Break with more cards, but Persona Break state lasts longer the more cards you have!
Guard Cancel Roll added
  • Similar to Guard Cancel Attack, this is is canceling a guard into a roll for 50 SP
S Hold System Added
  • Hold the A button to charge a meter that appears on screen.
    • Depending on how long the button is held, you will get you will get an EX move, Super, or Awakening super on release
    • Must be in Awakening to charge an Awakening Super
Fatal Recovery State added
  • All characters now have certain attacks (e.g. Yu's 214D) for which getting hit by any attack during their recovery is a Fatal Counter
Auto Combos for all characters changed
  • All characters have new auto combos, however Shadow Mode characters have the old auto combos from P4Arena.
All characters rebalanced and given new attacks
  • As always, characters have been tweaked for balance reasons.
  • Average combo damage has been reported to be lower than the previous game.
First attack landed gives a 10 SP bonus
